Methodism for our area began in Lyonstown in 1810 with Bishops Ashbury and McKendree presiding at the Conference. In 1813 Zenas Jones was appointed Circuit Preacher for the Sodus Township. By 1828, we were organized well enough to hold our first Quarterly Conference.

                 The First Methodist Episcopal Church of South Sodus was consecrated July 4, 1836. By 1840 the Centenary had completed the Second Methodist Episcopal Church. The Centenary at that time was a community of English Descendants who had their own church, school, and social life and was often called New England.

                 The Third Methodist Episcopal Church of Sodus was incorporated June 26, 1838 and by Christmas of 1841, in the roofed over basement, the members held their first worship service.  The Stone Church, which took until 1846 to complete, was mainly of Cobblestone and very beautiful. By 1850 it held it’s first bell.

                  The membership growth of the church demanded a larger building so that in 1889 a new brick building was erected on the same site. The following year a strong windstorm destroyed the steeple , its bell and damaged the rest of the tower. The present bell was installed in 1893.

                  Our beautiful Moller pipe organ was proudly installed in 1910. In 1950 during renovations, the chancel was redesigned and the organ was moved to its present position. The 1950’s also saw the addition of Sunday School rooms and by 1963 the major renovations had been completed.
